MOSIX

Prerequisites
This section assumes that you have upgraded your Debian installation to the testing (Woody) distribution, and that the kernel on the target machine is the custom 2.4.17 kernel patched to include Mosix support. The second item is an absolute prerequisite. Without Mosix support compiled into the kernel none of the elements of mosix will provide even the barest functionality. They will fail and generally not tell you why. Although this point may seem trivial, It is the most basic element of Mosix implementation and should not be overlooked.

While a full upgrade to woody may not be the absolute requirement that the custom kernel is (there have been times when I've been able to get a participating cluster machine with only a partial upgrade to the testing distribution) the likelihood of difficult to diagnose errors in such a context is high enough to suggest that it should be regarded as an absolute requirement.
